When you think of creating a new clothing collection, you probably imagine sketches, fabric swatches, and runway shows set against the backdrop of sunny Algarve beaches (because, let’s face it, that’s where our minds always go). But while the creative process is full of color and excitement, there’s a behind-the-scenes element critical to turning those dreams into reality: tech packs.
If you’re curious about how fashion is created and wondering what a tech pack actually is, you’re not alone—we didn’t know either when we first started! But as we delved into fashion manufacturing, we quickly discovered that tech packs are the essential technical documents that turn creative inspiration into high-quality, well-made clothing.
Simply put, a tech pack is a blueprint for each item in a fashion collection. It’s a detailed document that communicates everything a manufacturer needs to know—measurements, materials, stitching techniques, labels, trims, and even packaging requirements.
Think of these documents like an architect’s blueprints for a house. Without one, well… things can and will quickly go wrong.
Our Journey with Tech Packs: From Algarve Sunshine to Precision
At Sol & Sumo, our mission is to create high-performance, Beach to Street fashion that celebrates a Zest for Life. But to turn creative ideas into reality, we had to master the art of developing solid tech packs.
Thankfully, our Portuguese manufacturing partner—who has worked with world-class brands for almost 50 years—patiently guided us through the process. From helping us prioritize the most crucial details to offering expert suggestions, they helped us document every aspect in our first set of tech packs.
We were also pleasantly surprised by the wealth of resources available online for beginners. From educational videos like this one from Seaggs, to free and paid templates, there’s plenty of guidance out there. Ultimately, we used this information to create our own tech pack template in Canva, which has worked out for us.
But here’s the thing: what’s on paper doesn’t always perfectly translate into the real world. That’s where samples come in.
The Critical Checkpoint: Samples
Once the tech pack is complete, the next critical step before production is finalizing samples. While this step can be costly for smaller brands, it’s essential. Samples are the physical proof of what’s written in the tech pack, allowing us to catch mistakes and make adjustments before mass production.
It’s a comforting step, especially for newcomers like us—it ensures the final product matches the vision.
